La pièce fut donnée par le Théâtre Lumière en 1993. Comme elle comporte un nombre important de chansons, réorchestrées par Francis Guinle sur des rythmes modernes, les acteurs et actrices durent suivre une formation vocale qui leur permit par la suite de donner un concert du musique victorienne, et  pour la plupart, de participer à l'opéra rock élaboré par Francis Guinle à partir de l'oeuvre de John Bunyan, The Pilgrim's Progress.    Pour faciliter l'apprentissage des chansons, l'accompagnement fut joué sur un clavier numérique et enregistré sur bande magnétique. Ainsi, les acterus chantaient en direct, sans micro, mais sur un accompagnement pré-enregistré.     La première eut lieu au théâtre Le Luminier à Chassieu, et la pièce fut ensuite donnée dans plusieurs lieux, comme l'Espace Poisson d'Or à Lyon.

John Gay's Ballad Opera was staged by the Théâtre Lumière in 1993. As the play includes a fair amount of songs, the actors and actresses  had to train their voices. The songs were reorchestrated with modern rhythms by Francis Guinle. This meant that the troupe could later put on a concert of Victorian songs, and then stage a rock opera based on John Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress    For the actors to learn the songs more easily, the accompaniment was played on a digital piano and put on tape. thus the actors were singing live, without a microphone, but on a taped accompaniment.     The play opened at the theatre Le Luminier (Chassieu) and was then performed in various venues, including l'Espace Poisson d'Or in Lyon.
